‘Two Steps’ Shiraz
Our Single Vineyard Shiraz is entirely from our Langton vineyard in Mt Barker. Our best blocks of Shiraz are from some of the earliest plantings in the region which are now around 40 years old; the typically low yielding vines produce fruit with great depth of colour and flavour. Traditional winemaking followed by maturation for approx. 18 months in new French oak barriques (20%) with the balance in once /twice used barrels enhances the fruit characters and adds complexity. Ageing for 9 months in bottle before release ensures further integration and complexity. The season was cooler than average but the fine conditions in autumn allowed for a steady slow ripening, with the fruit flavours accumulating while the acidity dropped and tannin structure developed. A more challenging season but with good vineyard management we’ve produced some stand out wines.
COLOUR:
A lovely deep dark, crimsony red.
AROMA:
Has intense, ripe Satsuma plum aromas with some slightly smoky, dark berry fruit characters.
PALATE:
This has lovely mouth filling, juicy, dark plum fruit flavours typical of our cool climate grown Shiraz. These generous, sweet fruit flavours are balanced by the slightly charry, lightly drying tannins picked up during its oak maturation. There are lifted, lightly spicy characters with a hint of pepperiness, which sit well with the wine’s gentle acidity. It is a fragrant, well flavoured wine that was bottled relatively early to retain its fresh fruit characters, then matured in bottle for over 12 months to become well integrated. Very approachable now and will also reward further cellaring, eg 2 – 6 years. Serve with an Asian style beef dish.
